《霹靂神探》改編自1969年Robin Moore的非小說類著作﹝The French Connection: A True Account of Cops, Narcotics, and International Conspiracy﹞。是推出MPAA電影分級制後，首部獲得奧斯卡最佳影片獎的R級電影。影片提名8項奧斯卡，獲得最佳影片、最佳男主角，最佳導演等5項。1975年的續集《French Connection II》，亦由Gene Hackman 和 Fernando Rey主演。
